OPENING SCENE It was August 20, 1976, on a remote stretch of the Allagash Waterway in northern Maine, that four young men — twin brothers Jack and Jim Weiner, Charlie Foltz, and Chuck Rak, all students or recent graduates of the Massachusetts College of Art — were on a canoeing and fishing trip in the deep boreal wilderness. The lake they were camped on was Eagle Lake. The night was clear. They had built a large bonfire on the shoreline so they would be able to find their canoe in the dark when they returned from fishing. They paddled out onto the lake. They saw a large, glowing, oval object hovering above the trees. Charlie Foltz, who had brought a flashlight, signaled to it in dot-and-dash patterns. The object responded by descending and aiming a tube of bluish-white light directly at the canoe. They had no recollection of paddling back to shore. When they arrived at the shoreline they found the bonfire — which they had built to last for hours — burned almost completely down to embers. Years later, all four would, separately and under polygraph examination, recall the same memories of being aboard a craft and examined by tall, grey, large-eyed beings. BACKGROUND In August 1976 the four men were on a wilderness canoe trip in the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, a federally-protected river system in northern Aroostook County, Maine. None of the four had any prior interest in UFOs or paranormal subjects. The case did not become public until 1988, when persistent shared dreams and physical symptoms (including unexplained marks on the bodies of two of the four) led them to seek professional help from psychiatrist Dr. Anthony Constantino, then from MUFON investigator Raymond Fowler.
