Worth noting that the sandhill crane explanation is older than people think, Dr. Robert L. Smith proposed it almost in real time in 1966. That doesn’t close the case but it’s a useful anchor.

Visited the site in 2019. The trees at the landing co-ords still show the broken canopy pattern. Worth a personal pilgrimage if you're in Suffolk.
