OPENING SCENE It was 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 6, 1966, at Westall High School in Clayton South, a working-class suburb in the south-east of Melbourne, Australia, when the morning recess bell rang and approximately 350 students poured out of the classrooms onto the school grounds. Within minutes, several of them — initially a small cluster of fifth-form students playing on the oval — looked up at the cloudless autumn sky and saw what they all later told reporters and investigators was a silver-grey, saucer-shaped object descending toward a paddock just beyond the school's eastern fence line. By the time the object touched down — briefly, according to most witnesses, for only seconds, behind a stand of pine trees in the Grange Reserve — several teachers, the school's deputy headmaster Frank Samblebe, and a passing motorist had also seen it. A small group of students climbed the school fence and ran to the landing site. They found a circular patch of flattened grass approximately 30 feet across, which authorities later attended. Within hours, school administrators told the students not to speak about what they had seen. Within days, a small group of unidentified men in dark suits had visited the school and spoken with the witnesses. For more than forty years, the case remained relatively obscure outside Australia.
