The Phoenix Lights

OPENING SCENE For three hours on the evening of March 13, 1997, residents across roughly 300 miles of the American Southwest, from Henderson, Nevada through Phoenix, Arizona and on to Tucson, watched what witnesses universally described as a slow-moving, silent V- or boomerang-shaped formation of lights drift across the sky. Then, around 10:00 p.m., over the Estrella Mountains southwest of Phoenix itself, a separate display of stationary amber lights hung above the city for several minutes. Among the thousands of witnesses were the chief meteorologist for a local TV station, a former Air Force pilot, and Fife Symington, the sitting governor of Arizona. The two events — the moving V-formation and the stationary lights — are separate phenomena. Both happened the same night. Only the second has a confirmed conventional explanation. BACKGROUND The Phoenix Lights are usually discussed as one event but are in fact two related but distinct phenomena. The V-formation: a structured, low-altitude, slow-moving array of lights observed in formation from Nevada to Arizona between roughly 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Mountain Standard Time. The Estrella stationary lights: a horizontal row of amber lights hanging over the southwestern outskirts of Phoenix at roughly 10:00 p.m. Mountain Standard Time.
